Neda Agha-Soltan was killed 15 years ago by the Iranian security forces during the Green Movement protests in Tehran. The young woman was fatally shot in the chest on July 20, 2009, and her horrific death was captured on video and became a symbol of the demonstrations ignited by the dispute over the presidential elections after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed victory in a controversial election process.
The Green Movement protests were inspired by Mir Hossein Mousavi’s campaign, which has been under house arrest since the crackdown began, with mass arrests of the people participating in the demonstrations.
The protestant movement picked up momentum quickly, and it became one of the largest protests in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution, with an estimated three million peaceful demonstrators flooding Tehran’s streets and cities across Iran.
