Insufficient medical documentation limits public knowledge of the catastrophic magnitude of female circumcision, and of all kinds of aggressive bodily disfigurements imposed on either sex in any community. Perhaps historical justifications are to blame for entrenching, perpetuating, and prolonging this regrettable and violent practice. Who can stop people from burdening a fellow human’s body and psyche with a practice whose origins are all but forgotten? Only by ignorance can we watch a woman shed burning tears to appease the patriarchy.
The act of violating a woman’s corporal integrity, to coerce it into something more acceptable or functional for others – especially when those others have never known what it is to be a woman – is absolutely devoid of medical or social good. It is an act unheard of in the animal kingdom, unless one intends to make another their prey. Sorrowfully, it is an act that persists in nations and cultures across the world. You call its opposition, “women’s rights activism,” but, I call it common sense. Until women think for women, women decide for women, and women suffer for women, female circumcision will continue to be one of the most shocking and devastating practices in the world, and enlightened people must vocally oppose it until it comes to a full stop.
