The Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest

Two Middle East Images photographers have been shortlisted for the 2021 Andrei Stenin Photo Contest. Aggelos Barai has documented the conditions and chaos in the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Ebrahim Alipoor captured the difficult lives of Kurdish porters, or kolbars, bringing goods across the Iran-Iraq border. We are very proud of their accomplishments and eagerly look forward to the final announcement!

Authorities arrested a 27 year-old Afghan migrant in connection with the incident. Overcrowding at Moria has steadily worsened over the past year as the number of immigrants and refugees using clandestine routes from Turkey to the Greek islands remains high totaling nearly 60,000 in 2019.
